Journal 4 Tyler Green

Ishmael Beah got his first taste of war. Seeing his friends killed left him numb to any regret he might feel over killing someone. Watching his friends die lit an angry fire in him that led him to fight back, killing another human for the first time. He was going around and showing people who the evil side of him really was and how powerful he can be. There is a part in the book where Beah is handed his worst nightmare and he has to go into the war. When he’s in the war he is faced with a tragic loss of his best friends getting killed by gunfire. In this case if I was in his shoes, the one thing I would do is also go into revenge mode and make sure the people that hurt my friends got what they deserved. And I would fight back. I would either do the revenge or quit and just not get revenge because I would be the one getting hurt. But if this was me in this situation I would want revenge. Beah really changes attitudes when he goes to war now. They say in the novel a long way gone that after the tragedy of his friends it’s now “easy” to kill. It’s crazy after one war he is able to kill men without a problem. If there was a time and place where one of my friends have been hurt maybe killed there would be a part of me that would be scared and a side of me that wants revenge.

  1. Yep and I don't blame you it's human nature with this being the case for thousands of years. Humans haven't really changed just the name and place of it.

  2. I like how you connected with Beah about revenge. Many people disagree with Beah’s actions while you think you would do the same thing. I feel like I would want revenge also, but I don’t know if I could kill someone.

  3. I also agree like Krosbi about the connection with revenge, i like how you make the connection that you would do the same thing that beah has done. I feel that I would to a point because i would not want to be killed, but I don’t think i could just run through villages killing innocent people for no reason. On the other had people say that will will do crazy things for food if you are hungry enough, I can not say what I would or would not kill because thankfully i will not have to experience the same situation.
