Journal 2 from Krosbi Clark
Hi! My name is Krosbi Clark and this is my first year at Ohio State Marion. I am majoring in early childhood education. I plan to become a kindergarten teacher or first grade teacher. When I was in high school I played three sports such as volleyball, basketball and softball. A fun fact about me is that I coach seventh grade volleyball at Ridgedale Local Schools. I love the job because I get to coach a sport I played most of my life.
The theme that stood out to me in The House on Mango Street is perseverance. I think this theme is important because Esperanza shows a lot of perseverance in this story. Esperanza never gives up even when she is facing difficult times. I have experienced this theme when playing a sport in high school because I had to have perseverance in difficult games. My favorite passage from this reading is “Until then I am a red balloon, a balloon tied to an anchor” (Cisneros, 9 pg.). I think the author did a great job at describing how the character feels and the reader can visualize how the character feels.

I like the quote you chose. It really does depict how Esperanza feels and it does a great job of explaining/showing the reader just that.
ReplyDeleteYou picked a great theme. Esperanza seems to have a troubling life from having to deal with the awful living conditions she has experienced. Yet she continues to not let that get the best of her which really shows her character.
ReplyDeleteI would go a little deeper to say that the balloon actually represent, at the time she experienced it, her external locus of control. Meaning she believes things are out of her control. Thus leading to the conclusion that she wants a place of her own away from where ,the feelings of, things are out of her control.
ReplyDeleteI really like this theme! I can relate to you with showing perseverance during your sport in high school during difficult games. I also really enjoy the quote you chose. It stood out to me the most thus far.
ReplyDeleteI also like the theme you have chosen, and the quote you have chosen shows readers how Esperanza is feeling
