Journal Two from Josh

Hello, my name is Josh Barnhart. I’m from Powell Ohio but recently moved to Dublin. I live an active life style of hanging out with friends and doing physical activities. On weekends I spend my time working at Jerome Village country club where I serve food. I’m majoring in Nutritional science where I plan on being a dietitian in the future. A fun fact about me is that I went to the Indy 500 speedway over the summer and got to drive an Indy car.

While reading the house on Mango street a series of themes stood out to me. One theme in particular was the idea of change and adapting to ones environment. This was very present through out the book where the main character Esperanza moves from one living space to another and has to adjust to each homes needs. This is presented on (pg. 4) when when Esperanza and her family moved into the house on Mango street and had to adapt to the size of the house by each sharing a room. Personally I feel like this is an important theme for this book to have for it shines a lot of light onto Esperanza’s character and her family as people that can handle situations despite how tough they are.

I can relate to this for I have moved a multitude of times in my life and I’ve had to adjust to the living situations I’ve been presented with. Currently me and my family are living in temporary housing until the house we are building is done and the size let alone is something we are still trying to get used to.

One of my favorite passages from the book came from (pg. 9 )when Esperanza said “I am a red balloon, a balloon tied to an anchor. I found this quote to be interesting because I feel like as people we can be brung down by so many things in this world. Just like a balloon we wanna be free but at a point in everyone’s life something finds a way to hold us down. Either it be from grades, friends, etc. everyone’s faced it.

  1. Hi Josh and thanks for writing here. Don't forget to put a caption on your picture as I would like to know where that bridge is that you are standing in front of. I like your interpretation of her metaphor of the red ballon. She means her sister in the passage, but you connect it to life in that we all sometimes get tied down from where we want to be or go. At the same time, we need limits, especially when we are Esperanza's age, or we might fly off and pursue things that we thought were good for us, but in the end they are not. So it's a paradox, isn't it? We need freedom but we also need responsibility, and that balancing act is a huge part of all of our lives.

I like the theme you chose, and how you connected it with your life. My cousin experience the same conflict how she has to move every couple years because her father is in the military. She explained that sometimes she felt uncomfortable meeting new people, and she missed a lot of her friends when she moves. She also had a hard time adjusting to school because it could be during the middle of the term. She did not like it that much, but she got used to it. It is not an ideal life, but she made a lot of friends along the way.

  3. Good morning Josh!
When you were talking about yourself staying at a temporary house to build a new house. I felt a connection because my family as well built a house and moved into about a few months ago. Here is a tip when you move into your new house. a few days might be stressful so just think about the future and just see yourself chilling and all the new memories you will have.

  4. that was one of my favorite passages too!! the theme I wrote about was very similar to yours. I feel like that theme lets us see what all Esperanza has gone through with the different living environments shes lived in throughout her life.
