Journal 8- David Gray

While reading the book Callings by David Isay. I began to lean to one story in particular, and that story would be Sharon Longs story. She was a single parent, raising two kids, and working tons of part time jobs to provide food on the table. She went to college to find her callings, and she did. She found out hat she could go to college by her daughters financial aid lady by saying "You can go to college! I can help you" (Long 22).  She became a physical anthropology major graduate. She sculpts and molds faces with clay, and presents them in competitions and museums.

This really hit home for me because personal, my parents went through a divorce when I was about 6 years old. I only had my 7 year old brother, and my father. He worked tons of jobs to put craft mac n cheese and hot dogs on the table, and also to pay bills to keep the house. Instead of college, my dad found a new wife to help him become stronger and financial better. Longs story hit me in the heart because I know what it is like to be single by just watching my father. Something good will happen to you if you think positive, and it did for both of them.

My vocabulary word was anthropology. It said a brief definition in the book, but I just wanted to i get the full definition. It is the study of human societies and cultures and their development. It is also the study of human biological and physiological characteristics and their evolution. Lastly, my research question was, how many years do you need to graduate with a anthropology degree? Most anthropology bachelor's degree programs take four years to complete and require around 120 credits. If you wanna do that, it only takes 4 years!

  1. Anthropology sounds like such a fun and draining job. It’s amazing that she went back to school and found her calling. I connect to this story too because my mom had a job that wasn’t paying a lot. She found a better job, like Sharon, and can provide even more than her first job. My mom found a job that was her calling too.

  2. I was surprised that this was even a job. I find it very interesting that there are so many different career choices in college. There are just so many unique jobs out there just like Sharon's.

  3. Sharon long is an incredibly dedicated mom. She worked two jobs just to put the food on the table for her kids and for that she has my respect. I know an individual much similar to Sharron Long at my work. Her name is Amanda and she also works two jobs to provide for her family like Sharon did.
