Journal 9 Josh Barnhart

I chose to get my research question from the profile of employment councilor Darlene Lewis. In this Darlene helps her friend James who is an ex convict find a job in the work force.  She mentions that James had trouble finding a job due to his criminal background and this caused me to look up what the unemployment rate of ex convicts was and I was stunned by the result. Ultimately as it turns out the unemployment rate of ex convicts is 27% which surpasses the great depressions unemployment rate of 25% in 1930. Personally I believe this is absolutely ridiculous and needs to be fixed immediately. A lot of the people who have served time in jail come out as changed people yet society continues to deny them the opportunity to get a job in todays workforce.

Unemployment rate of ex convicts

A common theme I saw in Callings was determination. A clear example of this seen can be seen in the profile of Barbara Moore. In this Barbara wanted to be a bricklayer and is was to do what ever it took to get the job. Ultimately She was faced with extreme backlash from numerous bricklayers although, she did’t let that get the best of her. Barbara keeps working hard toward her goal and eventually got the job. Personally, I can relate to Barbara in one specific way. I honestly see my self as a determined individual just like Barbara. Ultimately this is because when I want to achieve something I don’t let anything or anyone turn me away from the goal. An example in my life where I’ve accurately shown determination was when I played lacrosse for my high school. Ultimately I had the goal of making the varsity team and I was constantly told by other people that I’d never get on Varsity. Although, I did’t let there opinions get the best of me and I worked hard every practice and eventually made the team.

  1. Hi josh!!! that number seems very accurate due to the people that are the managers and owners of certain businesses probably do not want ex convict working for them. If I owned a business I don't think I would be hiring ex convicts either! I just wouldn't think they could be reliable if they had gone to prison for something so horrible.

  2. I agree Josh, one of the most common themes throughout the whole book was determination. It seems in ever profile we read, someone was always determined to do what makes them happy and what drives them. So many people in these stories overcame the worst, and I think determination has a lot to do with that!

  3. My issue is that the depression was a population as a whole, and admits counting people as a whole. Convicts are only a portion of the pop. Thus a minority within a minority can't actually get a job. So that chart lies to you
