Journal 5 from Krosbi Clark

My favorite chapter in The House on Mango Street is Bums in the Attic. The theme in this story is class awareness. Esperanza feels ashamed of how her family looks like the hungry looking at houses they will never have. “I don’t tell them I am ashamed — all of us staring out the window like the hungry. I am tired of looking at what we can’t have” (Cisneros, 86). Esperanza feels that the people who live in the houses on the hill think they are better than people like her and her family. “People who live on the hills sleep so close to the stars they forget those of us who live too much on earth” (Cisneros, 86). This brings up another theme which is stereotypes. Esperanza then vows that when she’s rich, she won’t forget where she came from. “One day I’ll own my own house, but I won’t forget who I am or where I came from” (Cisneros, 87). I like this chapter because Esperanza is ashamed of Mango Street, but she won’t forget where she came from.

One of my role models in my life is my uncle. I chose my uncle because he taught me how to look at the world in different perspectives. He taught has taught me not to judge a person without knowing their story. I’ve learned a lot from my uncle, and I can ask him anything. He helped shape me into the person I am today. When I was younger and now, we would always watch movies. If I misunderstood a concept in a movie, he would go in depth of what the concept is. He teaches me new things everyday that help me become a better person everyday. I don’t have a picture available, sorry!
