Journal 5 Josh Barnhart

The house on Mango street is a book filled with meaningful chapters. Cisneros incorporates these through the likes of themes, characters and real life problems. One chapter that stood out to me most was the chapter titled Bums in the attic. A theme displayed in this was social stereotypes. This was clearly referenced when Esperanza stated that “ People who live on hills sleep so close to the stars they forget those of us who live too much on earth” (Cisneros 86). I believe this quote accurately embodies rich people as self centered who don’t care about the struggles of the middle class or poor. This quote further more presents the stereotype of rich people being careless individuals focused only on themselves. I can personally connect to this because I have a cousin who abides by this exact stereotype. He is a very wealthy plastic surgeon and cares not for the struggles of the middle class or poor but only himself

One person I’ve looked up to since a young age has to be my uncle Dan. He was in the Vietnam war and suffered a terrible leg injury. he has been a role model of mine because despite the horrible injury he faced he still to this day doesn't let it get the best of him and has a happy mood every time I meet him. He inspires me to be happy because I know if he can be joyous with the state he is in then I can as well. Unfortunately I don't have a photo of him but if I did I would definitely share it.
