Looking back at the book, Ishmael Beah is part of the Mende tribe. It says that the book show similarities of the Mende tribe like spirituality, community/ family, and celebrations/ food. For the spirituality part, they believe in animism. Praying/ believing in the sky shows signs of animism as well. Next, the family side of the ethnic group, children were required to respect the elders! The tribe is a big believer on respecting the elders. Lastly, the food side was a big factor to the tribe as well. According to an article, the Mende tribe “eat with their hands. In their first meal together as a family, Beah and his uncle eat chicken off of a communal plate. Beah says, ''To have chicken prepared for anyone was a rarity, and it was considered an honor. People ate chicken only on holidays like Christmas or New Year's''” (Study.com)

I had no idea that there were 16 tribes!! I thought there would be larger tribes and not as many
ReplyDeleteDavid it's crazy to think of how many tribes there are in Africa. It's also amazing to see the presence of western religion in Africa.
ReplyDeleteThis topic drew my interest because I wanted to know what tribe or group Beah was apart of. We never really find out in the story. It's interesting that Beah is apart of the Mende tribe because I wouldn't have known if it wasn't for your research. I also liked how you explained why Beah is apart of the Mende tribe, it really helped me understand why he was.
ReplyDeleteI thought the topic was very interesting. I did not think there was that many tribes in Africa. I thought it was neat to know the different types of religion in each tribe. I think it is really cool how there is a wide spread in Christianity in any part of the world.
