Journal 7 Josh Barnhart

In class were reading the book Callings by David Issay. In it I chose to analyze the profile of Marat Kogurt. After thoroughly reading this profile I’ve Came to the conclusion that there are two take aways from this reading.

The first is that Marat is an incredibly committed individual. His dream is to be an NBA referee and he won’t let anyone change his mind. This is clearly demonstrated in this passage when his mom shows disapproval for his dream job. She ultimately try’s to sway his opinion to get him to be a lawyer or doctor in the future but Marat refuses to give up his drive to be a referee in the future.

The second take away from this reading is that Marat is a very passionate individual .When he finally gets his job as a referee he enjoys it not for the pay that is offered but because of his interest of the field. He clearly shows this on page 28 when referring to his job by saying “I wasn’t doing it for the money. I was doing it because I really loved it” (Isay 28).

One question I continuously had while reading this profile was how much NBA referees get paid. I later found out they get paid an average salary of $150,000.

 NBA referee (bellow)

  1. I have even more mad respect for the man since, there is less referees than doctors or lawyer and makes more than enough money to live a good life style. There are 1.1 Million doctors, 1.3 lawyers then 60 referees in the NBA. According to Google.

  3. Its crazy enough that Marat found his passion due to his injury. That is a true person right there, he does it because he wants to, not for the money.
