Journal Seven from Krosbi Clark

The book Callings is a book that tells true stories about people doing what they love. All the stories have different meanings and great messages. The story I will be writing about is Reyes. Storm Reyes had a tough childhood and never thought she could ever escape. That mind set of hers changed once she was introduced to an object that would change her life forever.

Storm Reyes grew up working and living in a migrant farmworkers’ field. Her parents were abusive, neglected, and they were alcoholics. She would see nice houses, but didn’t ever think she would have one. She never dreamed to have anything because she wasn’t supposed to dream or even have hope. “You may walk down the street and see a row of nice, clean houses, but you never, ever dream you can live in one. You don’t dream. You don’t hope” (Isay 40). Reyes never dreamed or had hope that she would ever live a better life. Her life would soon turn out better because of her life choices.

Migrant farmworkers’ field. This is how Reyes spent her days as a child.
Reyes life was changed when she was introduced to books. A bookmobile person stopped by the fields and had books. Reyes was afraid to even look at the books because she wasn’t allowed to have any. The bookmobile person gave her books that she was interested in, and he told her something that I believe impacted her life. Reyes was interested in learning about the mountain, and the bookmobile person said, “You know, the more you know about something, the less you will fear it” (Isay 41). She took the books home and loved them. She would go back to get books, and that is when she came to a realization. She realized the world is much bigger than the camps, she could escape this terrible life. “By the time I was fifteen, I knew there was a world outside the camps, and I believed I could find a place in it” (Isay 41). She finally found the courage to leave and start her own life. Hope just wasn’t a word for her anymore, her hope helped her find her passion.

Reyes became a library assistant because of her love for books. She spent thirty-two years as a library assistant. She didn’t see it as a job, but she saw it as a way to help people make a connection with the library. She even believes the library saved her life and I do too. My research question was how much does a library assistant get paid in Ohio? I found that their salary per year is $31.7k - 59.9k.

  1. Hey Krosbi
I understand that immigrants have a hard time making a good living. When we read House of Mango Street, Esperanza story is relatable to Reyes. Esperanza never believed she will ever get a house on her own. Esperanza said, “I stopped believing that we will ever leave Mango Street” (Cinceros 12). I think in America immigrants has a hard time living the American dream. I was shocked when we finished reading both stories that they made it through. Esperanza got a house of her own, and Reyes got a decent job to make a living. I would like to know how many immigrants actually make it through? I thought it was really cool to see that Reyes got what she wanted, and made a decent living in America.

  2. Hi Krosbi,
I really liked this profile. It was one of my favorites so far in the book. I will also agree with Kayla on how this can relate to House on Mango Street. Reyes and Storm both came from a rough childhood but both were determined to make something of themselves and differ from their family history. I really like your research question as well, I didn't know how much library assistants make!

  3. Hey Krosbi,
I really enjoyed this profile! They had both came from a rough childhood but were both determined to make something out of themselves even though they grew up not having much, and they wanted to have more for themselves and their future families then what their family had for them.
