Journal Seven from Kayla

The book my class is currently reading is Callings. The story I analyzed was Yates. Yates’ family was living during the Great Depression. I was wandering what people did to survive the Great Depression? The two main things the Yates did was work harder and take care of the family.

People living in the Great Depression was struggling financially. Alton decided to go into the army so that he can give money to his family. His dad was a single parent, but he could not feed the family. Alton's father had to take on a side job. Alton states, “After he came home from work, he did these extra things to try to make enough money to take care of us”(Yates 31). Alton could not stand to see him struggle, so he decided to finish high school, and join the military. Alton wanted to support his family, so he would send money to them. Like Alton’s family, many families during the Great Depression had children working, and they all took care of each other.
Children working more because of the Great Depression
Alton wanted to make his family proud. He wanted them to not struggle any longer. He did not want to just sit back, and watch them struggle. Alton took it upon himself to help his family. He would send money and food.  He wanted to support his family in anyway. Alton’s father was so proud of him, and what he is doing. Alton wanted his family to be successful, and to not worry about finances. Alton states, “I think that’s one things that made me feel really great about what I was doing. Making my father proud was something that I always wanted to do”(Yates 35). At the end Alton got to make his father happy before he passed away. Alton got to see his family fight through the Great Depression, and survive it.

  1. I couldn’t imagine living as a child during the Great Depression. It amazes me and makes me feel sad that children had to work to support their families. I feel this way because these children probably never had a childhood like we were fortunate enough to have. This story makes me more grateful for my childhood and life in general.

  2. I really feel for Yates in his profile because he grew up during the great depression. I also have tons of respect for Yates stepping up to the plate, and working his butt off to help his family.

  3. Alton is an incredible father to say the least. Taking on two jobs to provide for his family truly depicts the character as a very caring individual. Ultimately Alton put’s his family’s needs before his very own.

  4. Alton reminds me of my dad. Both are great dads, and they both put their families needs before their own. Their personalities are a lot alike as well, so I was really invested in Alton's story.
