Journal Five Payton Miller

My favorite chapter from House on Mango Street is “ A House of My Own”. I chose this chapter because I feel that i can relate the most to it. As teenagers we have all thought about what it would be like to live on your own and do anything and everything you wanted to do without someone bossing you around. That is exactly how Esperanza is feeling in this chapter. She states “With my porch and my pillow, my pretty purple petunias.” She is already planning out what she wants her house to look like because in her mind she doesn’t belong on Mango Street anymore or really ever. In my active ready I highlighted the quite I used because i felt it was important to describe the chapter and it is also an alliteration. A House of My Own is a very short chapter and i feel that it is all very important to connect with the entire book. I feel that this chapter could really give us some foreshadowing of what Esperanzas life could end up being like.

I have had many positive influences in my life thus far but as an adolescent I had one that really stuck out to me. My Aunt Kathy is an all around amazing person and I will never forget the lessons she has thought me so far. When I was growing up my mom was a school teacher and on the days that I didn’t have school I would go to my grandparents and Aunt Kathy would come visit after work. I just remember her always taking time out of her day to help me or making me feel special all the time. Kathy is my moms middle sister (She has three). Several years ago both of their parents passed away. Everyone in the family struggled with it and it was a very tough time. Aunt Kathy was always so strong through all of those things and I hope to always follow in her footsteps in life. On a much happier note, we vacation with her every summer in Florida. She always lives up to the title of life of the party and trips with her never disappoint. I loved them when I was little, and I have no doubt I will love them in the future as long as she’s there.

  2. I really liked how you related the chapter you chose to your live, because I can also relate to it. I moved out for college and living on your own is such a different experience.

  3. Hey Payton.
I totally agree that we can relate to the chapter House of My Own. I also agree that Esperanza will free from whoever rules over her life. For example My friend was tired of living by her mom's rules. She did not like being told what she can do or cannot do. My friend is excited to live on her own because she likes taking responsibility of her own actions. My friend feels free because she can do whatever she wants. She dose not have to hear the nagging from her mom.
