Journal 5: Taylor

My favorite chapter in Cisneros has to be My Name from the beginning of the book. I feel this one was my favorite because it reveled a lot about Esperanza and who she wants to be. This chapter is important because you can tell from the start that Esperanza wants to make something of herself and wants to be a better version of herself. In this chapter she talks about her grandmother which is who she got her name from. She goes onto say "I have inherited her name, but I don't want to inherit her place by the window."  This quote was one I have highlighted because I feel the writing is at it's best. She wants to be more. She wants to be better. She wants to have more.

One person that influenced me in my childhood was my older cousin, Brittney. She is 5 years older than me and growing up I always thought she was the coolest person to  now. I loved when I got to hang around her and loved it even more when I got to hang out with her and her friends. At the time, I didn't understand majority of things they would talk about. Sometimes I even think they forgot I was there. Some of the conversations were not appropriate for a 10 year old to hear but what did I know at the time. We were at the park one day around the corner from her house and her neighbor, Nicole, came with us. Nicole was even a year older than Brittney so as Brittney was influencing me, Nicole was influencing her. I will not go into details to what this specific conversation was so I will leave it simply as inappropriate for a 10 year old. Still to this day I can remember exactly what she said while we were hanging out on the swings during a long summer day. Although growing up I looked up to Brittney, I did not let her influence my behavior. I thankfully knew what was right from wrong (I hope) and kept doing my own thing. I still look up to her to this day. She's more of a sister than a cousin at this point of our lives.

  1. I really like the chapter My Name as well. It shows that she doesn't want to be like everyone else and that she wants to be someone else. It also shows that her grandmother has a big impact on her life (at least her story) and it also shows Esperanza how she doesn't want to end up like her grandmother did.

  2. I also really like this chapter. I feel that it shows that even though you may not agree with something you should at least try to be okay with it, just like your name.

  3. since you are older, hopefully you can now relate to Brittney now. I had a few moments like these growing up as well, but I just ignored all of the bad language. For the chapter now, that chapter really stood out to me as well because her name is everything. Its crazy to see her change from the beginning to the end of the book.
