Journal 7- Taylor

The profile I chose for this journal was Firefighter Dekalb Walcott Jr., 60, Talks With His Son, Dekalb Walcott III, 27, Also A Firefighter. Two major takeaways my partner and I found were to follow your heart no matter how hard the job may be and to have goals and inspirations.
In this profile we were inspired to follow your heart even if the job may be difficult. This is what Dekalb Walcott III did. On page 56 Dekalb is explaining when he first came on the job thinking, "what the hell did I get myself into? It was kind of a rude awakening for me." But he overcame this first fear at the first job when he couldn't see the windows because the smoke was billowing out. You open the door and smoke and heat crash into you. He overcame these fears and struggles because in his heart he knew he wanted to be just like his dad so he knew no matter how difficult the job is, if his dad can do it, he can too.
The other takeaway we found in this profile was to always have an inspiration. No matter who it may be in your life, always have someone or something to look up to. In this profile, Dekalb Walcott III looked up to his father and wanted to someday become another version of him. On page 56, Dekalb explains what he saw his father as, "I was the kid who wanted to grow up and be just like his daddy. Back in the nineties, when Michael Jordan was really famous and everybody wanted to be like mike? Well Mike was good--but me, I wanted to be like Dekalb Walcott Jr. You were my Michael Jordan." This was important in the profile because his ultimate goal was to become a firefighter just like his dad, and by having this goal he always had something to look forward to in his life. It was a sense of motivation and he reached his goal.
My research question for this profile was how competitive is it to become a firefighter?
I found that many people who apply to become a firefighter, don't get through the whole application process. There is always competition for a fire department. In 2005, Salinas Fire Department in California was recruiting, they received over 1,000 applications for 25 available positions. Most applicants are quickly disqualified so it makes the competition much smaller.

  1. Yep realistically of all of the generation stories told this one is my favorite/most memorable, to me, odds are the reason why this is the first story told vs somewhere else and gets and starts with a more light hearted story at first vs the end story which is way more grim stories at the end, loss of two sons or losing the father and mother early on.

  2. I also agree that you should always have an inspiration. I think its extremely important to always have someone or something to keep you motivated.
