Journal Five- David Gray

1.) while reading The House On Mango Street, I had a few favorite chapters, but one stood out to me. A House Of My Own is short, but it has a powerful meaning behind the language. “Nobody to shake a stick at. Nobody’s garbage to pick up after” (Cisneros 108). These two sentences also introduces the  theme of the chapter as well. This quote really stood out to me because, Esperanza wants a house for herself, and having a house to herself comes with great responsibility.
Esperanza is ready for the challenge and wants to take on her own responsibilities for her own good sake. Lastly, Cisneros adds the perfect amount of alliteration to top this chapter off.

2.)One person that really stood out to me was an old friend named Joe (Not his real name). We were about 11 years old, and we were really good friends until one night. We went boating, had sleepovers, played Nerf wars, and played Xbox all the time. He was one of the most popular kids in the school while I was not so popular.
One day, we both were playing Xbox on the TV until Joe had an idea to shoplift batteries, because our controllers died. I was dumb so I did it, but I knew it was wrong. Joe did this all the time and it was his first time he did it with me. We got to the store and he put the batteries in his pockets while I watched. I was the first one out, and I waited for him. I saw him get stopped by an employee and after I saw that, I ran home. I felt bad for leaving Joe, but I thought it was the right thing to do.
Monday, when I saw him at school, I was nice about it but I basically said I don’t like doing that stuff, so I dropped him. I saw him once awhile in the halls, but then he moved to Indiana. He was a bad influence on me and I knew that. I made the decision to drop him due to his bad behavior and his influence on me. I hope he is doing better now.

  2. Hello David the chapter you chose was truly meaningful to me as well. Although it did highlight responsibility on Esperanza's part it also showed Esperanza's hope for the future
