Journal Seven- David Gray

Reading the book called Callings, by Dave Isay. I chose the passage with Sharon Long. The two take aways I noticed in the chapter was,  Long is a very hard working, smart thinking women, but she sometimes takes her job a little weird. She likes to compare her job into reality shown in the passage. “I watch people pretty closely in restaurants, in airports, people I work with. I just read every little thing in their face” (Isay 25). Long looks at people because she sculpts faces for a living. She like to pick out each and every detail on faces.

Sharon Long is also determined. Long goes to college, even though she though she was to old, and she was a single mother with two kids to raise. The way she coped with all of these problems was she took all of the sculpting classes to gain experience easy. The classes Anthropology and forensics classes helped her get a fantastic starting job in her field.

My research question was how many years does it take to become a artist. The answer to that is 2 years minimum. To major in physical anthropology, you will need to take four years of

  1. Hey David
I thought what Sharon does is really cool. I am happy that she figured out what she wanted to do in life. I am currently going to college to be Forensic Biologist. I know it may seem weird how she takes her job, but in Forensics you see some pretty messed up crimes. In Forensic you might see a three year old murdered. In it is very hard to cope with that gruesome image. Sharon states, “Sometimes Is have to take time to myself or I will break down on what I see during my job”(Isay 27). I think it is pretty cool what she does, and I am happy that she found a job that speaks to her. Most Americans do not have that opportunity.

  2. Hey David. I thought what Shannon did was really weird as well. I couldn’t imagine being in public and watching someone examine my face for minutes just the thought of it makes me uncomfortable. Also I think it’s incredible how Shannon went to college at the age she was. A lot of people have this misconceived notion that college is only for young people but she clearly show’s that’s not the case.
